My top 10 favorite foods for beautiful, glowing skin

I suffered from acne as a kid. I tried everything; over the counter products, dermatologist perscribed creams, scrubs and treatments. Nothing seemed to work. Little did I know at the time that my diet played a huge role in my breakouts. I was in love with chocolate, those little debbie and hostess snacks for lunch, chips and pizza whenever I could get it. It wasnt until I started traveling and my diet started to change that my skin really cleared up. I started to notice the difference in my skin when I would eat a diet high in greens, nuts and colorful fruits and veggies. Lesson learned, clear skin starts from within. Now that I am getting older I not only want foods that will help keep my skin clear but also help prevent wrinkles and sun damage.

Here are my top 10 favorite foods that have benefits to keep your skin glowing. (In no perticular order)

1. Water


One of the most simple ways to clear skin is by drinking water. When you drink enough water you help rid the body of toxins. Drinking enough water throughout each day means upping your fluid levels to keep the brain fully functioning, reducing stress and also replenishing water in your cells. A good rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces each day.

2. Tomatoes

The red pigment that gives tomatoes its bright color is called lycopene. Lycopene helps stimulate skin circulation to keep you glowing. Also rich in vitamin C which helps keep the skin firm by aiding in collagen production.



For me, the most noticiable difference in my skin happened when I added greens into my diet. Eating them every day. There are many leafy greens that have benefits for the skin but Kale is my favorite. Its great raw in salads or steamed and seasoned, and also juiced. Kale is a knock out green that contains vitamins A, B complex, C, E and K as well as high levels of manganese, calcium, potasium, iron, magnesium, protein, folate and phosphorus.

4. Sweet Potato

This is such a great root vegetable to add to your diet. Sweet Potato’s are a complex carbohydrate which helps regulate blood sugar by slowly releasing sugar over time. Its important to regulate blood sugar to keep stress levels down in the body, stress leads to breakouts. Also containing beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A to help send oxygen to the skin.

5. Avocado

I love avocado’s for so many reasons but one great reason is the benefits it has for the skin. Loaded with vitamin E to boost the skins glow, packed with vitamin C to reduce inflamation and produce collagen. Avocado oil is also known for keeping skin moistureized inside/out.

Great in salads, soups and chili. Kidney beans are high in zinc which is known to fight blemishes and zap zits!

7. Oatmeal

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and when I learned of all the benefits of oatmeal I added it to my rotation of favorites. Full of vitamins, oatmeal helps keep blood sugar stable which is important for hormone levels that can contribute to wrinkles. Oats are also found to be healing for the skin when you soak your body in a tub with them.

8. Peppers

Green, Red, Oranage and yellow peppers are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. The antioxidants help decrease your skins sensitivity to the sun. There are also studies that have shown women you eat peppers regularly have fewer wrinkles around the eyes.

9. Nuts


Nuts containing omega-3 fatty acids help improve skin’s elasticity. Zinc and selenium found in nuts help with fighting break outs.

10. Pomegranates

Loaded with antioxidants, pomegranates help fight free radicals and regulate blood flow to help keep skin glowing.
